If ordering directly from LI-COR, Lincoln, NE, USA:
- 9964-037: 12-gram CO2 cartridges (qty. 25) to be used only with the LI-6400 and LI-6400XT
- 9968-227: 8-gram CO2 cartridges (qty. 25) to be used with the LI-6800
If ordering from LI-COR GmbH, Germany:
- 100-996437: 12-gram CO2 cartridges (qty. 50) to be used only with the LI-6400 and LI-6400XT
- 100-9968227: 8-gram CO2 cartridges (qty. 25) to be used with the LI-6800

If shipping restrictions make getting CO2 cartridges directly from LI-COR or our distributors too costly, or take too long, you can use food grade CO2 cartridges. Cartridges used in the production of carbonated water work well with the LI-6400/XT and LI-6800. Avoid the use of CO2 cartridges that are used in paint-ball guns or cartridges that are not food grade. These cartridges can contain high oil content. If oil gets into the system, it may cause damage that must be repaired at the LI-COR factory.

For both the LI-6800 and LI-6400/XT you can use 8-gram cartridges. For the LI-6800 you can use them as is, with no modification required. For the LI-6400/XT you need a spacer in order to compensate for the shorter height of the 8-gram cartridges compared to the 12-gram cartridges.
When replacing the cylinder, you may also want to replace the O-ring if it leaks. O-rings are included with the spare parts kit for your instrument and available for purchase.

Making a spacer to use the 8-gram CO2 cartridges in the LI-6400/XT
One of the simplest ways is to use a stack of coins. You can use any coin that can fit in the LI-6400/XT’s CO2 cartridge container; for this example, we used 14 U.S. pennies.
Alternatively, a copper tube (1.5 cm diameter and 2.0 cm height) can be used.
A copper spacer or a stack of coins will compensate for the reduction in size that the 8-gram cartridges require, when compared to the 12-gram cartridges.
