Frequently asked questions
We have examined many different USB adapters and found the type that we sell to work best with all of our instruments. Other adapters may work, but they may not.
We can only guarantee the FTDI adapter that we sell. It is included with many of the LI-COR instruments that require serial communication with a computer. We have found that some third-party USB adapters (Prolific, for example) do not accurately transmit all the data from the instrument to the computer, or vice versa. You should use an adapter with an FTDI chipset, and Belkin and Keyspan adapters typically work well with our instruments too.
We use white gaskets to reflect the light down onto the leaf rather than absorbing it as black gaskets would do.
Yes, you can! In version 6.1 software and later, please make a new configuration and choose “mass-based” in the options list. For version 6.0 and lower, enter the mass of your sample in decigrams in the leaf area column.
The CO2 cylinders used for LI-6400/XT are made of steel, so empty cylinders can be recycled with any other steel item.
The LI-6400/battery is 12V lead acid battery. It is unregulated by DOT for transportation by truck, rail, ocean and air transportation because they meet the requirements of 49 CFR 173.159(d). The only transportation requirements are:
- The battery must be securely packed in such a way to prevent the possibility of short-circuiting.
- The battery and the outer most packaging must be labeled ‘NONSPILLABLE’ or ‘NONSPILLABLE BATTERY’.
A spacer can be placed in the 12 gram cartridge cap to provide pressure for an 8 gram cylinder. The spacer can be made of any solid material including plastic or coins.
The LI-6400XT can communicate with a computer using RS-232, USB, or Ethernet. The Ethernet adapter allows for communication directly to a computer or remotely over a network. You can use the LI6400XTerm software to download data and control the instrument from your computer. You can even connect a wireless router to the Ethernet adapter and use an iPad or iPhone to control the instrument.
